The bald man tossed a battered leather suitcase into the trunk and ran around to hold the passenger door for the Dark Man. The goateed man climbed in the back next to his master and then the bald man took a seat in the front beside the driver. |

The cab pulled away from the terminal and followed the signs to Interstate 240 East. As the driver casually maneuvered through the light evening traffic, the Dark Man's mind was racing. Time was running out and all he had gotten out of the man in Miami was a lot of talk about diamonds and the telephone number of some woman in Memphis. Now he had the address to go with the number, but he still silently cursed his son for a fool and wished that he dared perform the ceremony to cast the boy's soul into everlasting darkness. But he couldn't. Without the smokescreen of this vendetta to avenge the boy's murder, the Dark Man's companions might start asking the wrong questionslike why he was really searching for this woman. And that wouldn't do. The Dark Man glanced at his two companions. No, that wouldn't do at all. |

Of its own volition, his hand strayed to his neck and his fingers played over the outline of the stones hidden underneath his shirt. They were fakes, as was the necklace, but good fakes. The same types of stones in the same order. The Dark Man had even made a sacrifice to the dark lords to instill the necklace with power. Of course, it was nowhere near as powerful as the originala kitchen match to a raging forest fire. But it would fool the casual eye and that included his protégé with the goatee and his fat, bald-headed friend. |

The Dark Man glanced through the window at the rain-slick streets. He saw the reflection of his own dark face and felt like smashing his fist through the glass. It was all so frustrating!
